Bhí oíche cheoil den scoth againn i Séipéal Naomh Iosaif tráthnóna Dé Sathairn nuair a tháining Cór LHC, Ceolfhoireann LHC agus Cór De La Salle College, Waterford le chéile do cheolchoirm mhór na bliana. Parents, staff, students and friends of Laurel Hill Coláiste, as well as families and friends from Waterford who travelled up for the occasion, were treated to an evening of musical delights. The programme was varied and moved from largescale classical choral and instrumental works such as The Hallelujah Chorus to smaller settings of chamber music and solo performances in a variety of styles. The choir was accompanied on both piano and organ by Mr. Trevor Selby. One of the highlights of the evening was the world première performance of the Ballet music from Trevor Selby’s newly-composed opera The secret Garden, by the orchestra. It was an honour and a privilege to have been given the opportunity to perform this beautiful work. Rapturous applause and a standing ovation to Trevor followed. Indeed, there was more than one surprise on the night as Dr. Richard Hayes, of the English Department here at LHC, surprised many of us with his superb solo performance of Winter, Fire and Snow and You Raise Me Up. Finally, it is fitting that the work and dedication of Br. Ben O’ Hanlon and Ms. Orla Colgan-Ahern, music teachers at De La Salle, Waterford and here at LHC be acknowledged. Ms. Colgan has given up countless hours of her free time, preparing the girls for Saturday’s performance, and we are indebted to her for her dedication, generosity of spirit and for the tremendous service she gives to music in our school and city. Gur fada buan í!
