Eolaíocht na Sraithe Sóisearaí

Aidhm

Is é an aidhm atá leis an eolaíocht sa tsraith shóisearach tuiscint fhianaise‑bhunaithe an scoláire ar an domhan nádúrtha a fhorbairt maille lena chumas chun fianaise a bhailiú agus a mheasúnú; a scileanna chun obair eolaíoch a dhéanamh a dhaingniú agus a dhoimhniú; go mbeadh sé níos féinfheasaí mar fhoghlaimeoir agus go n‑éireodh sé níos inniúla agus níos muiníne ina chumas féin chun an eolaíocht a úsáid agus a chur i bhfeidhm ina shaol laethúil.

Le bheith níos sonraíche spreagann sí gach scoláire

  • chun níos mó taitnimh a bhaint as foghlaim an heolaíochta, as a dtiocfaidh spéis ar feadh an tsaoil san eolaíocht
  • chun litearthacht eolaíochta a fhorbairt agus í sin a chur i bhfeidhm i dtoisí cogneolaíochta, mothaitheacha agus sícealuaile i leith anailíse ar shaincheisteanna eolaíochta a bhaineann leis an tsochaí, leis an gcomhshaol agus leis an inbhuanaitheacht
  • chun nós intinne eolaíochta agus treoshuíomh fiosrúcháin a fhorbairt trí ghníomhaíochtaí ranga, saotharlainne agus/nó lasmuigh de láthair na scoile a chothaíonn iniúchadh, samhlaíocht, fiosracht agus cruthaitheacht i leith fadhbanna mealltacha ábhartha a réiteach, agus chun feabhas a chur ar a chumas réasúnaíochta agus cinnteoireachta
  • chun príomhscileanna na sraithe sóisearaí a fhorbairt chun sonraí a aimsiú, a úsáid, a bhainistiú, a shintéisiú agus a mheasúnú; chun tuiscint agus torthaí eolaíochta a chur in iúl trí mheáin éagsúla a úsáid; agus chun smaointe a chosaint ar bhunús fianaise
  • chun corpas eolas eolaíochta a shealbhú; chun tuiscint a fhorbairt ar an Domhan agus ar spás agus ar a áit sa domhan fisiceach, bitheolaíoch agus ceimiceach agus chun cabhrú le bunús a bhunú le haghaidh níos mó ardfhoghlama.

Forbhreathnú: Cúrsa

Díríonn an tsonraíocht d’eolaíocht na sraithe sóisearaí ar eolas an scoláire ar an eolaíocht agus fúithi a fhorbairt tríd an snáithe aontach, Nádúr na heolaíochta, agus na ceithre shnáithe chomhthéacsúla: An domhan fisiceach, An domhan ceimiceach, An domhan bitheolaíoch, agus AnDomhan agus spás. Dearadh í d’íosmhéid 200 uair an chloig de rannpháirtíocht an scoláire ar an gclár ama thar thrí bliana na sraithe sóisearaí.

Junior Cycle Science

Aim

Science in junior cycle aims to develop students’ evidence-based understanding of the natural world and their ability to gather and evaluate evidence: to consolidate and deepen their skills of working scientifically; to make them more self-aware as learners and become competent and confident in their ability to use and apply science in their everyday lives.

More specifically it encourages all students

  • to develop a sense of enjoyment in the learning of science, leading to a lifelong interest in science
  • to develop scientific literacy and apply this in cognitive, affective and psychomotor dimensions to the analysis of science issues relevant to society, the environment and sustainability
  • to develop a scientific habit of mind and inquiry orientation through class, laboratory and/or off-site activities that foster investigation, imagination, curiosity and creativity in solving engaging, relevant problems, and to improve their reasoning and decision-making abilities
  • to develop the key skills of junior cycle to find, use, manage, synthesise, and evaluate data; to communicate scientific understanding and findings using a variety of media; and to justify ideas on the basis of evidence
  • to acquire a body of scientific knowledge; to develop an understanding of Earth and space and their place in the physical, biological, and chemical world and to help establish a foundation for more advanced learning.

Overview: Course

Junior Cycle Science encourages students to explore the world around them through curiosity, investigation, and critical thinking. The course helps students understand how science explains natural phenomena, supports technological development, and impacts our everyday lives.
The specification for junior cycle science focuses on the development of students’ knowledge of and about science through the unifying strand, Nature of science, and the four contextual strands: Physical world, Chemical world, Biological world, and Earth and space. It has been designed for a minimum of 200 hours of timetabled student engagement across the three years of junior cycle.
Throughout the three years, students take part in hands-on experiments, research projects, and collaborative investigations designed to build understanding, confidence, and curiosity.
Through Science, students develop curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills that prepare them for senior cycle studies and an ever-changing scientific and technological world.
